On the morning of September 15, President Lu Jing and Qin Liqing, deputy director of the President’s Office, visited the College of Foreign Languages. Leaders team of the College faculty representatives attended the seminar.
Dean Zhang Yan gave a welcome speech. In the speech of Lu, he pointed out that our university should adhere to the path of characteristic development. The development of college and disciplines should be combined with the development of the international shipping center and the new area of the Lingang Free Trade Zone. The College of Foreign Languages shoulders two major tasks of the university, one is the teaching of foreign languages and the other is the development of foreign language disciplines. The core task of the university is to cultivate talents, which relies on the academic research of teachers that use their academic research experience in education.
Mo Wei, Zhou Xiang, and Tong Helong, teachers of the College of Foreign Languages, put forward the confusions they encountered in teaching and research, such as the time allocation between teaching and research, the integration of the specialties, and the characteristics of the school, the preparation of public English textbooks, and the declaration of academic subjects. President Lu pointed out that teaching and scientific research are united and not contradictory. He suggested that young teachers should spend two to three years in their courses, after which they should devote themselves to research. The quality of the course will be improved only when the content and methods of teaching are constantly updated.
Mr. Song Zhiping from the College reported the combination of student training with big data and artificial intelligence and the proposed further corpus construction in the Department of Translation. President Lu encouraged the faculty to carry out the building of the corpus and related platforms in the field of navigation so as to seize the opportunity for the development in the era of language intelligence.
In the speech of President Lu, the faculty members have a more innovative and comprehensive understanding of their teaching and research, and will certainly keep pace with the development of the university to achieve the goal of building “a maritime university with global influence”.
