On November 28, 2021, the award ceremony of the 4th People's China Cup Japanese International Translation Competition and Translation Practice Seminar was held, and the results of the competition were announced. Xiong Zixuan, Japanese 181 of the College of Foreign Languages, won the third prize of Japanese to Chinese translation and the second prize of Chinese to Japanese translation in the undergraduate group, and Li Shiyang, Japanese 201, won the third prize of Japanese to Chinese translation in the undergraduate group.
The People's China Cup Japanese International Translation Contest is jointly organized by the People's China Magazine of China Foreign Language Bureau and the Sub-Committee of Japanese Teaching Guidance of the Teaching Guidance Committee of Foreign Languages and Literatures in Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education, co-organized by the China Association of Japanese Language Teaching and Research, and hosted by Guangdong Translation Association and Guangzhou Lianpu Translation Co.
The Japanese to Chinese translation of the text was selected from あなたと読む戀の歌百首 (One Hundred Love Songs to Read with You), which involved the Chinese translation of short songs by the Japanese singer Tawara Manji, and examined the comprehension and writing skills of the contestants. The original text was quoted extensively, and it was difficult to link the Chinese translation of the short songs with the content of the text and to make the Chinese translation logically coherent. The theme of the Chinese-to-Japanese translation is life and choice, and the original text uses a lot of repetitive and prose sentences, so it is difficult to clarify the sentence components and relationships and translate them into the corresponding Japanese expressions.
The two students from the Japanese Department read the original text repeatedly and revised it according to the Chinese and Japanese expressions on the basis of their full understanding of the meaning of the original text. Their excellent translations stood out from the rest of the entries and won the prize.
In addition, Xiong Zixuan won the Excellence Award in the 2020 Sasakawa Cup ---- essay contest.
The event is co-organized by People's China Magazine and the Japan Society for Science, and will be co-organized with the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Library starting in 2019, changing the name from Sasakawa Cup ---- to Sasakawa Cup ----. As part of the Year of Promotion of Sino-Japanese Cultural and Sports Exchanges recognized by the Chinese and Japanese governments, the 2020 competition aims to encourage Chinese youth to read and watch books, anime, and films about Japan and to write their own reflections on them in order to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture. to deepen their perception of Japanese culture and improve their Japanese writing skills.
The entries in the contest came from 207 secondary and higher education institutions and various sectors of society in 27 provinces, autonomous regions and Hong Kong SAR. After a rigorous selection process, 4 winners, 8 second prizes, 30 third prizes and 40 excellent prizes were selected among the 1815 essays. Under the careful guidance of Ms. Li Lianji of the Department of Japanese Language, Xiong Zixuan wrote an essay on the reading of Japanese author Osamu Dazaiji's famous essay 'The Slanting Sun' under the title 'The Glory of the Slanting Sun', taking into account his personal experience during the epidemic, and finally stood out among nearly 2,000 submissions and won the Outstanding Award.
