Recently, the Sixth National Intercultural Competitiveness Competition for College Students in Shanghai and the Sixth Foreign Language Agency Cup Shanghai Intercultural Competitiveness Competition for College Students in Shanghai were successfully concluded at Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press.
The competition guided by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and hosted by Shanghai International Studies University, focused on the comprehensive language application ability of the participants, aimed at strengthening students' national sentiment and thinking ability, and cultivating innovative intercultural communication talents who are good at telling Chinese stories in English.
In order to select the participants, Ms. Yang Weixiu from the College of Foreign Languages organized the intercultural competitions for the 2021 Foreign Language Institute Cup for Shanghai University students. After a fierce competition, Sun Hui, Zhao Yi and Chen Xiangyu from the School of Foreign Languages stood out from the rest and won the Grand Prize in the school competition.
During the preparation for the final, Ms. Yang sacrificed her free time in the evenings and weekends to organize our three students to go to the office and the borrowed room for coaching and rehearsal of the competition. The whole coaching work, including imparting the experience accumulated in previous years, competition strategies, as well as case text and performance action guidance, was carried out in an orderly and targeted manner. Our maritime team members drew the most difficult public diplomacy section, and the three students, under the guidance of their instructors, overcame many difficulties and began to actively prepare for the competition since early October, meticulously and wholeheartedly devoting themselves to this competition. Through discussions, searching for a suitable case study from a wide range of materials, and constantly revising the script, they finally chose the topic of Cultural Conflict in the Lithium Acquisition Project in Bolivia to show the various conflicts in the communication between China and Bolivia, and proposed a corresponding cross-cultural conflict solution. The topic was Cultural Conflict in the Lithium Acquisition Project in Bolivia.
About a week before the competition, Ms. Yang received an urgent notice that due to the sudden outbreak of epidemic in Shanghai, the competition was held for the first time in the form of online competition and offline judging, and the final round was held simultaneously. The team members did not panic, overcame the difficulties of network equipment and venue, and always maintained a good spirit, and finally completed the competition successfully, winning the 9th place among the 30 participating schools and achieving the third prize.
