Research activities in the College of Foreign Languages during the pandemic

This semester, although the normal teaching and living order was affected by the pandemic, the research activities of teachers in the College of Foreign Languages were not affected. The teachers have successfully completed the declaration of National Social Science, Humanities and Social Science Projects of the Ministry of Education, Chinese Academic Foreign Translation and National and Ministry of Education Monographs Later Funding Projects for 2022. Two books and translations have been published in print or online since the beginning of 2022, and nearly 10 SCI and CSSCI papers have been published. The declaration of each layer and topic has a double feature: in the background of the discipline of foreign language and literature, the academic focus of the teachers is not only to think deeply and solve the fundamental philosophical and social science methodological issues of humanities, but also to explore the specific application of maritime language and culture under the paradigm of interdisciplinary disciplines of literature and science. In the background, the faculty members' academic concerns include both in-depth consideration and solution of philosophical and social science methodological topics based on humanities, as well as the exploration of specific application problems of maritime language and maritime culture in the paradigm of interdisciplinary arts and sciences, and the special direction of international maritime management and maritime governance of the school.

Professor Zhou Pin led a team of young faculty and graduate students to work with a research team from the Department of Neuroscience of the University of Sussex Medical School in the UK. They overcame the time difference and the inconvenience caused by the closure control to their work and life. They also wrote articles for special issues of SCI journals and completed the translation of academic monographs commissioned by the Commercial Press.

Professors Zhang Yan and Li Huadong led the young teachers and lab engineers in polishing various projects and upgrading lab software, while contacting maritime industry units and information technology companies to declare and build the Maritime Language Resource Library platform, which is highly compatible with the foreign-related needs of the country, region and industry as well as the university's own characteristics. It will support academic research, talent training and think-tank construction in relevant foreign-related fields.

Associate Professor Wang Xian and other faculty members have joined hands with experts from the Merchant Marine and Law Schools to establish a team on International Maritime Language Standardization, and under the promotion and leadership of the International Exchange Office, they have written a proposal which has been submitted to the International Maritime Organization through the relevant departments of the Maritime Bureau of the Ministry of Transport.

Wu Mengjiao led undergraduates with research quality and enthusiasm to build the Language and Cognition Experimental Group, which has more than 30 active members every year. During this year's epidemic, five students and their teams applied for major projects, and three of them were approved.

The faculty members are also active in the academic circles at home and abroad by participating in international conferences and reviewing manuscripts to make the academic voice and evaluation of the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai Maritime University. Dr. Sui Xiaojing of the Department of Japanese Language and other faculty members have participated in various academic conferences such as Research and Deepening of Language Corpus - Focusing on the Linkage between Multiple Perspectives of Japanese Language Education and Seminar on the Development of Japanese Language Curriculum and Teaching in the New Era. The School of Foreign Languages held a number of academic conferences, including Research and Deepening of Language Corpus - Centering on the Linkage between Multiple Perspectives on Japanese Language Education and Seminar on the Development of Japanese Language Curriculum and Teaching in New Age Universities.

The Multilingual Service Center of Lingang Special Area, established by the College of Foreign Languages under the guidance of Lingang Administrative Committee and Pudong Immigration Bureau, was inaugurated in March 2022 by the relevant leaders of Shanghai Municipality, Lingang Administrative Committee and Party Secretary of the school, Song Baoru. In addition to the existing series of activities, during the epidemic, Ms. Li Guojiao led students to participate in the Language Dabai initiative jointly launched by 17 foreign language universities and colleges in Shanghai to provide multilingual translation and simultaneous interpretation services online.
