As one of the Frontier Lectures/Humanities Series of the College of Foreign Languages, Professor Shi Zhikang from Shanghai International Studies University held an academic lecture Essentials of Confucianism in the lecture hall of Foreign Language Building in the afternoon of June 19. Vice Dean Guo Haixia presided over it, and some teachers, graduate students and all 2018 undergraduate students of English major attended.
In the lecture, Prof. Shi Zhikang first introduced Confucius from his life, thoughts and achievements, and then Prof. Shi explained and analyzed the Analects with his own study experience. Combining different ways of thinking, Prof. Shi elaborated on benevolence, loyalty and filial piety: a benevolent person must have the weakness of a man and the firmness of a god, a benevolent person is at peace with benevolence, and a wise person is at the benefit of benevolence. At the same time, Prof. Shi also emphasized that one should do unto others what one has established, reach others what one has achieved, and do unto others what one does not want. Finally, Prof. Shi also combined with the saying A man cannot fail to be ambitious, and asked everyone to have ambition and strive for it.
The academic lecture was profound and insightful, which made the students deeply feel the charm of Confucian culture, deepened their understanding of the differences between Chinese and Western cultures, and promoted the students to establish and enhance the awareness of cultural confidence.
