The 9th meeting of the IMO Sub-Committee on Human Factors, Training and Watchkeeping (IMO HTW) was held in London from February 6-10, 2023. The meeting was an overdue phase of the gradual return to offline format of IMO meetings after the epidemic, with a mixed online and offline format. As a member of the Chinese delegation, Wang Xian, a faculty member of the College of Foreign Languages, participated in the General Assembly and the Drafting Group (DG) activities online. There were nearly 50 representatives from more than 30 countries in the drafting group. After three days of discussion and consultation, the drafting group submitted to the General Assembly the revised opinions of three model courses including Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (1.20) and the working requirements of the five model courses to be revised.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a special agency of the United Nations whose mission is to promote safe, environmentally friendly, efficient and sustainable shipping through cooperation. HTW is held once a year, and the nine HTW meetings set 15 topics covering the implementation of the STCW Convention and the validation of the model courses, and the development of measures to ensure the quality of training on board as mandated by the STCW Convention.
