Following the announcement of two Ministry of Education Youth Fund projects in mid-September, two more projects of our institute have been announced for the 2023 Shanghai Philosophy and Social Science Planning Project, including one general project and one youth project in linguistics.

Project Title: Research on Cognitive Processing Mechanisms of Subtitle Translation Recipients Based on Eye Tracking Experiments
Dr. Chen Lin is a lecturer and postdoctoral researcher in translation. The proposed project Research on Cognitive Processing Mechanisms of Subtitle Translation Recipients Based on Eye-tracking Experiments focuses on empirical research on cognitive processing of subtitle translation, combines eye-tracking experiments with translation studies, and examines visual attention and information acquisition of subtitle translation recipients, i.e., audiences, in the reading of audiovisual and multimodal texts in subtitle translation, with a view to better interpret the cognitive processing mechanisms of audiences in multimodal texts in subtitle translation. This is to better interpret the cognitive processing mechanism of the audience in multimodal text reading.
Eye-tracking technology is mostly used in static text reading research, but this project expands the scope of translation cognition research and promotes the development of translation cognition research. The research results provide reliable data indicators of audience cognitive processing, thus providing feedback for subtitle translation research and practice, helping to improve the quality of subtitle translation and promote language acquisition in multimodal text reading with subtitle translation.

Project Title: Research on Initiation Effects and Cognitive Mechanisms in the Post-translation Editing Process of Machine Translation
Jiajun Qian, Ph.D. in Translation Studies, Lecturer. He is mainly engaged in the research of cognitive process of translation, translation technology and corpus translation. The proposed project Research on Initiation Effect and Cognitive Mechanism in Post-translation Editing Process of Machine Translation aims to explore the initiation effect and cognitive mechanism behind the post-translation editing process of neural machine translation from the theoretical perspectives of psycholinguistics and metrologistics, and by utilizing eye-tracking and keylogging technologies. This project is of great significance to the teaching practice of post-translation editing and the improvement of the interface of post-translation editing tools.
